I wish Carrolltowne Mall had more of a “town center” feel to it. I don’t really get a sense of community and walk ability when I am there. Honestly, I have not been to that mall in a few years since it sucks so royally bad and I work just a short walk from the Columbia Mall. Also, a Lowes would be nice, although E-burg’s Home Depot is much better than Ellicott City’s and Columbia’s. A place to jog would be nice too (if you know of one, do tell).
I really like the Mexican joint near Jimmy Ray’z and Strappazza. I eat there quite frequently.
Yes, I agree.. Carrolltowne Mall is horrible. That has been talk that “Black Oak Associates” the owner of the mall is planning on redeveloping the complex sometime in 2008. let’s keep our fingers crossed..
A petsmart! I'm really surprised that there isn't a Petsmart. I'd like to see that and a couple more restaurants. There isn't a good choice other than your generic microwaved-food joints (chilis, panera, bob evans, taco bell).
I'd like to see better planning, as it is a pain to bop around from one location to another, what with the divided highway and all. If I am in Eldersburg to go to Home Depot (and I echo the sentiment of wanting a Lowes...), I only go to tHOme Depot, as it's a pain to go anywhere else, what with getting back in the car, waiting at 4 lights, making a Uturn, and parking again. I'd rather just go home.
I see Eldersburg becoming in only a few short years what Ellicott City is. Sprawl. Trashy. I avoid EC at all costs. In fact, I choose to go to Westminster, which is farther, rather than go to EC.
I may be in the minority but don’t believe the current development pattern in Ellicott City (along 40) is bad. I would rather have the retail developments and “big box” stores focused in one area then spread among residential areas. Most big box stores won’t locate in the “village center” developments as they are currently built-out in Columbia as they don’t have the density. The great thing about Route 40/Elliott city is that it can easily be by-passed using I-70. Unfortunately Eldersburg does not have this bypass arrangement nor does not seem to have the long term planning apparatus in place to focus and guide new developments.
Why should anything be added? Why should continued overgrowth continued to be encouraged for the sake of convenience?
I am amazed that people move to rural areas to get away from sprawl, then kevetch about not having convenience, then moan about overdevelopment. I have family up in that area, and they they neither need nor want any additional growth.
There is already a defined area of development in Eldersburg and I'd like to see future development focused in this area. As more people move into the area, additional development is inevitable...though it needs to be planned and focused on already developed areas.
Fortunately or unfortunately with our economy, people will continue to move into our area and they will require further development.
downtown (for lack of a better word) Eldersburg is not rural... i moved into the area, knowing what it was... suburbia..
The Carrolltowne Mall area (by the library) seriously needs be fixed up before adding anymore new development. It's been mostly shut down for years, and while there's always been rumored to be plans for it to be rebuilt nothing gets done and it is mostly left to be an empty lot (great place to get mugged).
Meanwhile, I see signs for new development by Walmart. WTF? What a stupid plan! Like we *really* need more traffic in that area. It's become a total mess to drive in since Martins moved in. My car was totaled there by a 16 YO who ran a stop sign, and we seem to run into near misses there every day at the stop signs between Home Depot and Safeway.
We need more community parks. It seemed like a couple existed a while back but got shut down a while back. I'd like to see something where you could have a nice picnic, fly a kite, go for a hike or a jog, and/or take the dog for a walk. Sort of like Piny Run, but more accessible (like Centennial Lake used to be in Columbia).
We DON'T need any new stores (at least not ones that require new development—unless it's in the Carrolltown Mall—which seriously needs a facelift). It's nice not to have the ugly sprawl we see in Catonsville and Columbia, and it's not that big of a deal to drive 15-20 minutes to Columbia/Ellicott City/Catonsville/Westminster to go shopping.
We also need a stop sign at Victor Drive & Johnsville Road. It's very disturbing how there is a crosswalk to an elementary school there and there is horrible visibility, but people rip right through there anyhow.
We also need "traffic calming" (speed bumps) along Victor Drive. We have a lot of young children in our community and no sidewalks, but there are lots of people who seem to think it's okay to drive up the curvy road at 70 MPH.

We need another grocery store...(just kidding)
How about a Friday's or Don Pablo's
a Starbucks in Carrolltowne Mall

We need a Lowes, because our Home Depot seriously has been sucking lately. Their employees are rude and incompetent (except in Painting).
